Analogy Generation in Science Experts and Novices

چکیده

There is a critical inconsistency in the literature on analogical retrieval. On one hand, vast set of laboratory studies has found that people often fail to retrieve past experiences share deep relational commonalities, even when they would be useful for reasoning about current problem. other historical and naturalistic research show clear evidence remindings based commonalities. Here, we examine possible explanation this inconsistency—namely, principles increase as function expertise. To test claim, devised simple analogy-generation task can administered across wide range We presented common events bases from which generate analogies. Although themselves were unrelated geoscience, event was explainable terms causal principle prominent expert geoscientists likely spontaneously produce analogies geoscience relied same principle. Further, these examples, prompts increased their frequency among nonscientists scientists another domain, but not (whose spontaneous retrieval levels already high). In contrast, example best explained by outside all groups required prompting substantial numbers principles. Overall, pattern suggests use characteristic experts. suggest adopt habitual patterns encoding according key contributes propensity matches. discuss implications nature expertise science instruction assessment.

Auditory category knowledge in experts and novices

What do listeners know about sounds that have a systematic organization? Research suggests that listeners store absolute pitch information as part of their representations for specific auditory experiences. It is unclear however, if such knowledge is abstracted beyond these experiences. In two studies we examined this question via a tone adjustment task in which listeners heard one of several t...

Running head: EXPLANATIONS FOR EXPERTS AND NOVICES 1 Coordinating Gesture, Word, and Diagram: Explanations for Experts and Novices EXPLANATIONS FOR EXPERTS AND NOVICES

Successful explanations are a symphony of gesture, language, and props. Here, we show how they are orchestrated in an experiment in which students explained complex systems to imagined novices and experts. Visual-spatial communication--diagram and gesture--was key; it represents thought more directly than language. The props, real or virtual diagrams created from gestures, served as the stage f...

Differences between Avalanche Experts and Novices

Differences between avalanche experts and novices have long been cited as a key issue in designing effective avalanche education, yet few investigations have quantitatively explored these differences. In this study, we examine how self-reported training, knowledge, skills, and behavior differ between avalanche experts and novices. From 2002 to 2004, we surveyed 300 avalanche professionals and w...

Experts' Explanations Engage Novices in Deep-Processing

Experts and intermediates fundamentally differ in the ways they explain subject matter to novices. Experts provide less details but in a highly coherent format, whereas intermediates provide many additional details but in a format with low coherency. In a recent study, we found that experts’ explanations enabled novices to acquire more transferable and flexible knowledge as opposed to explanati...

Spinal fMRI of Interoceptive Attention/Awareness in Experts and Novices

Many disciplines/traditions that promote interoceptive (inner sensation of body parts) attention/awareness (IAA) train practitioners to both attend to and be aware of interoceptive sensory experiences in body parts. The effect of such practices has been investigated in previous imaging studies but limited to cerebral neural activity. Here, for the first time, we studied the impact of these prac...
